Character & Word Frequency

Counts graphemes or browser word segments, highest frequency first. Word segmentation may be ambiguous. CSV formula-like text receives a protective quote.

Everything runs in this browser; input and output are not uploaded.

Processed content stays in this page’s memory and cannot be recovered after clearing or closing.

About this tool

Count text by grapheme or word using browser Intl.Segmenter, optionally ignoring case and whitespace. Word mode skips segments that are not word-like. Results are sorted by decreasing frequency. Chinese word segmentation can be ambiguous and is not dictionary-specific linguistic annotation. Input and results stay in a browser Worker.

How to use

  1. Paste the text and choose grapheme or word mode.
  2. Set case and whitespace handling, then run the count.
  3. Review frequent entries and word boundaries, then copy or download the text, count CSV.

Frequently asked questions

How are emoji counted?

Grapheme mode uses complete grapheme segments rather than simply splitting UTF-16 units. Exact segmentation depends on browser support.

Why do some CSV entries start with an apostrophe?

Formula-like entries receive a protective apostrophe to prevent spreadsheet software from executing them as formulas.
