About this tool
Repair mojibake caused by displaying encoded bytes as Western characters, such as restoring café to café. The tool reconstructs recognizable Latin-1 or Windows-1252 bytes and strictly decodes the chosen character set. Unrecoverable characters or invalid byte sequences return an error. Input and output are processed in your browser.
How to use
- Paste the garbled text or load the example.
- Choose the character encoding actually used by the original bytes, then run.
- Compare the restored text with the intended meaning before copying or downloading TXT.
Frequently asked questions
Can it recover question marks or replacement characters?
Lost bytes cannot be reconstructed reliably from replacement characters. Look for the original file or an undamaged copy.
Why does UTF-8 decoding fail?
The reconstructed bytes may use another encoding or be damaged. Confirm the original encoding instead of treating an incorrect result as recovery.
